Sting Performs Another Corporate Conference: Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco October 2011

Announced the same day as his corporate gig in Orlando on May 18, Sting was revealed to be a performer at the Oracle OpenWorld business conference in San Francisco on October 5, 2011. This performance follows several months after his summer Symphonicity Tour ends and likely will be similar in scope to his recent performance in Orlando. Merely sign up for this technology conference to see Sting at Oracle OpenWorld 2011!

The question that remains is whether additional Sting performances will be announced in that window of time between the end of the Symphonicity Tour on July 31 and the Oracle performance on October 5? Stay tuned Sting fans!

Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot: Matthew Morrison Covers Sting

Here is Matthew Morrison of Glee singing “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot” with Sting. Personally I think this offers nothing new over the original; it is average, predictable and brings me no glee. But I may not be the best judge since this isn’t one of my favorite songs to begin with. What do you think, Sting fans?

Matthew Morrison of Glee Confirms Duet With Sting

Sting Matthew Morrison Duet Let Your Soul Be Your PilotMatthew Morrison of “Glee” will duet with Sting covering Sting’s song “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot” on Morrison’s self-titled debut album to be released on May 10, 2011. Apparently Morrison himself is a big Sting fan and said of Sting:

I am happy to confirm that the final duet on my album is with one of my icons, a musical genius, Sting. I was honored that he agreed to do the duet and allow me to sing with him on one of his most incredible songs, ‘Let Your Soul Be My Pilot’.

First of all, the song title was incorrectly mentioned by the source, and I’ve left it that way since I’m quoting them. Second, one of Sting’s most incredible songs? “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot” is an odd choice from Sting’s vast catalog of songs, and it certainly wouldn’t be my pick for a duet with anyone. In fact, Mercury Falling is probably my least favorite Sting album; the only song I loved on that album was “I Was Brought To My Senses”, but that singular poetic and amazing song takes my breath away every time I hear it and makes the whole album worthwhile for me. So I wonder if Morrison’s version of this song will change things up or be a straight-forward cover?

From one Sting fan to another, what do you think of Morrison’s choice of song?

Sting Apollo Theater NYC April 28, 2011: Review, Setlist, Video

Sting performed a special fan club concert at the Apollo Theater in New York City on April 28, 2011. Following is the setlist from the show, reported to have a few minor flubs as Sting, the orchestra and new conductor Sarah Hicks prepare for the upcoming summer leg of the Symphonicity Tour. Also included are several videos from Sting fans who attended the show (Fragile and Roxanne), where security was reported to be tight and photos and videos highly discouraged. Although anticipated, no new songs were introduced to the Symphonicity catalog beyond what has been performed previously.

Sting Apollo Theater NYC April 28, 2011 Setlist:
If I Ever Lose My Faith
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Englishman in NY
Roxanne
Mad About You
When We Dance
Russians
I Hung My Head
Why Should I Cry For You?
Whenever I Say Your Name
Fields of Gold
Two Sisters (with Joe Sumner)
Next to You
Shape of My Heart
This Cowboy Song
Moon Over Bourbon Street
End of the Game
All Would Envy
King of Pain
Every Breath you Take (with Joe Sumner)
Desert Rose
She’s Too Good For Me
Fragile
Message in a Bottle

Personally I’m disappointed no new songs were performed. Rumor has it one new song was practiced but did not make it into the show. (Could that song be “I Burn For You” possibly?!) What about you, were you hoping for new material to be added to this tour entering it’s second year and revisiting Europe for a second time? Could new songs be added at a later date?

Sting Will Perform Corporate Conference in Orlando May 18

Looks like Sting will perform at a private corporate conference in Orlando on May 18, 2011. Not a big surprise, since he does seem to entertain at these types of events often, he did a law firm’s holiday party in Houston last year. If you really want to see him, no problem! Just sign up for the business conference and at the end of the conference you’ll be treated to a Sting concert! Oh, just one more thing. That will cost you $1,950!

Sting Named to 2011 Time 100 List

Sting 2011 Time List of 100 most influential peopleCongratulations to Sting for being named to the 2011 Time 100 list, recognizing him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. It’s no surprise really, of course he’s been influential in music for breaking down the barriers between different genres of music. This is especially evident this last year with the highly regarded and commercially successful Symphonicity Tour, which has beautifully blended elements of rock, pop, country, jazz and classical into something new and spectacular to behold. Here is what Sting has to say about what inspires him to be one of the most influential people in the world.

You probably want me to name some politician or scientist or some anthropologist who discovered something. I’m inspiried by small things, by the people around me, by my family, my wife, my children, the things they do, the musicians I work with, by their kindnesses, their genius, their inspiration. They inspire me by doing just normal things that allows me to live more than . . .You know, I look at the papers, and I’m not very inspired by things. I’m inspired by the people around me, that keeps me going.

Casey Abrams Compared to Sting on American Idol Tonight

Casey Abrams sang “Nature Boy” by Nat King Cole on American Idol tonight while once again playing the upright bass, and judge Steven Tyler had this to say about his performance:

Casey, you are an artist in the truest sense of the word . . . It’s a certain sophistication in what you do, man, that’s like Sting and beyond. And you are so good, man, I gotta tell ya.

What a conincidence since I just compared Casey to Sting four days ago! Once again Casey was brilliant, and he continues to get my vote! Check out “Nature Boy” by Casey here.

Another Reason to Love Casey Abrams on American Idol

Sting caricatureI haven’t blogged a peep about American Idol this season, but I’ve been watching and rooting for Casey Abrams each week. This last episode solidified my admiration after Casey announced he was going to sing “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by Sting and The Police. Casey is a Sting fan?! How cool is that? Unfortunately, he ended up changing his mind and singing “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” instead, but still. The guy definitely has great musical taste and loads of talent, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him to win this season. Take a look at his segment from the April 6, 2011 episode, and check out that upright bass he’s playing! Now, who else does that remind you of?

Sting is Punchline for Saturday Night Live Skit Twice

Sting and his excessively reported sexual prowess was twice the punchline of a Saturday Night Live skit with Sir Elton John about the Knights of the Realm slaying a dragon this weekend. I have to wonder if Sting knew about this beforehand and if he approved of this? And for the record, Sting is a CBE, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, not a Knight. See the skit for yourself here.
